Proper dental hygiene

A beautiful smile is not only a gift of nature, but also the result of our daily efforts.

But do we really clean our teeth properly? Is it really enough to brush twice a day for two or three minutes? When do we need to brush our teeth? What kind of accessories do we need for a perfect oral care? How do we know that our teeth are clean? What kind of toothbrush is the best? Which toothpaste should be used? We receive questions like these daily in our office. If you are interested, read on.

Choosing a toothbrush depends on the patient's dental status (crowns, implants, removable prostheses ...), periodontal health (inflamed gums, deep periodontal pockets, larger interdental spaces ...), general health (systemic diseases), bad habits (smoking, coffee drinking, fizzy drinks ...).

In particular, it is considered that the toothbrush should not be too hard, since food debris and plaque can be removed even with a soft brush. On the other hand, even with a hard brush, we cannot remove calculus, but we can mechanically damage gum and teeth with an incorrect use of it.

We strongly recommend the use of electric brushes, as they are more efficient and easier to use, additionally they massage the gums and therefore contribute to the health of periodontal tissues.

Toothpaste is regarded only as a chemical aid to cleaning, as mechanical removal of plaque is the most important. You can choose a toothpaste that you like and suits you the most. In case of good and proper oral care you will never need a toothpaste dedicated to relieve specific problems (sensitivity to temperature, inflammation of the gums...). Foremost, we do not recommend the use of whitening toothpastes containing abrasive particles.

Once you have selected a suitable toothbrush, you can start using it properly. There are several brushing techniques. The one we recommend is simple but very effective: from pink to white! Gently slide the brush down or up (depends on the jaw), from gums towards the teeth, a few slides in one place, and do not forget the back side of your teeth! Focus when brushing, don’t do other things meanwhile. Ten minutes of brushing, while getting dressed or making coffee is much less efficient than one minute of proper brushing!

Enough for this time, next time more about accessories to clean the interdental spaces.
